If I Should Die by Amy Plum

If I Should Die is the last book in the Die for Me series about revenants in Paris. This review will have spoilers for the first two books.
If I Should Die (Revenants, #3)
HarperTeen

Kate fears the worst when Violette and the numa take Vincent's body and her fears are proven when Vincent enters her mind and gives her a final goodbye. Kate cannot believe that Vincent is gone and believes there must be someway to save him. The bardia fear that Violette now has the power of the Champion. When Bran, a healer, tells the group that Vincent is not the Champion and that he believes there is a way to reunite him with his body, Kate is willing to go to the ends of the earth for her love. The bardia meanwhile hope to find the Champion who may be closer to home than they think. Can the new Champion save them from the numa and unite all revenants?

I knew how this was going to end since there were hints throughout the series. I did find it a fitting ending, a bit Twilightesque, but satisfying. What I loved the most was Amy Plum's writing style, her descriptions of Paris were beautiful! I am really excited to try her new book After the End to see her style in a bit different plot. I will miss the characters of this series, particularly the secondary characters.

Favorite Character: Jules. I like his humor and his bravery in leaving his family to escape his heartbreak. The novella before this book from his point of view was very interesting and my favorite read of the series.

Favorite Quote: "Mercy is the key. You can force people to follow you but you will never have their love or respect."

Overall, this was a nice, predictable end to the series. I look forward to reading more of Amy Plum's books. 4 cups of cocoa!

Seriously Series Reading Challenge Update #1 and #2

The Seriously Series Reading Challenge is hosted by Kelly at Reading the Paranormal and you can sign up at this link. I am trying for Semi-Serious in all the categories. I totally forgot to update in April so this is my combined 1 and 2 update.

In series rereads I finished the Immortal Secrets of Nicholas Flamel series by Michael Scott. I read books 2 through 6, since I read book 1 in December. I was going to reread 1 at the end, but since Kelly says you don't have to reread the whole series to count it, I think I will skip one. I want to write a post about the series as a whole and hopefully will get to that. I am trying to make it not have spoilers and that is what is so tricky about the post.

In series started before 2014 I have finished Perfect Lies by Kiersten White, which finished the Mind Games series and I am almost finished with If I Should Die, which will finish the Revenant series by Amy Plum. I would really like to finish 6 series that I have started before the year is up.

In series started in 2014, I have read the first 4 books and 2 novellas in the Mythos Academy series by Jennifer Estep. I bought books 5 and 6 and hope to finish these before the year is up. I don't think the 7th book comes out until next year, so if I can read 5 and 6, I will be caught up! I am hoping to read the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer too for this challenge. Books 1 to 3 are out now and book 4 comes out next year.

I am really enjoying this challenge and it is helping me to finish some of those series I have for whatever reason put off finishing. Thanks to Kelly for hosting!

2014 Book Bingo Update #2

2014 Bingo Challenge-01

Book Bingo is hosted by Anne from Creativity’s Corner and Kristilyn from Reading in Winter.
I am trying for a coverall and I am going to have to buckle down to reach this goal. I have finished 17 books so far.

In the TBR category I have read 3 books: Touch of Frost, The Fault in Our Stars and Snow.
In the Mix It Up column I have have crossed off all the squares! I read Opposite of Fate for nonfiction. I read Animal Farm for my classic, Dragonflight for my Reread, The Magician-another reread- for my Free Square, and Fangirl for my Contemporary.
In Series books I have read 4: Kiss of Frost, Dark Frost, Crimson Frost, and The Calling.
In the Genre column, I have only crossed off two spots. I read Their Eyes Were Watching God-another classic- for my Free Square and I read Attachments for my romance book.
In New Releases I have read 3, Jinx's Magic, Cruel Beauty, and Perfect Lies.
I am still struggling with finding books to keep my attention. I started off strong and now I just can't find anything I want to read and finish reading. Hope you are doing great on your board! Thanks to Anne and Kristilyn for hosting!

Opposite of Fate by Amy Tan

The Opposite of Fate: Memories of a Writing Life
Penguin

This will be a short review of her memoir. I needed a nonfiction read for Book Bingo and I have wanted to read an Amy Tan book for awhile now. I loved the Joy Luck Club movie and used to watch it all the time when I was a teen. When I saw this short story/essay collection and read that it was her memoir, I had to try it. She calls it her book of musings.  I enjoyed how she put together the short stories and even though the timeline jumps around a bit, it still seemed really cohesive. She has a beautiful writing style which draws you in and to me it was also a calming read that I could read right before bed. She covers everything from the relationship with her mom to her many losses in life and she also talks about writing in general and what it was like to help with the Joy Luck Club movie. This was written about 10 years ago, so it does not discuss her most recent work.

Favorite Quote: I really enjoyed the whole book and there were several phrases that were beautiful and introspective. "In the hands of a different reader, the same story can be a different story." This was from her section on the best stories and was my favorite of the book.

Overall, it was a nice insight to her life and work and makes me want to pick up her novels! 5 cups of cocoa!

Yearlong Challenges Update

Since the year is now a little over half over, I thought I should check in with some of my yearlong challenges. I am doing okay in a few and I really need to catch up in some others.

I have read 2 classic books out of 6. I finished Animal Farm and Their Eyes Were Watching God. I am actually where I thought I would be at this time with this challenge. I hope to start Emma soon!

Smiling Shelves

I have read two for this challenge, Flora and Ulysses and Shen of the Sea, but I still need to review the second one. I am rereading A Wrinkle in Time with the Teen Book Club, so I will be counting it toward this challenge.

I have finished 7 for this challenge! I only need one more reread to reach my goal, but I think I will actually end up surpassing my goal with this one.

  ReviewBooks_sq

I have read 2 of 10 for these two challenges, so this is clearly where I need to work. I have several e-galleys that are patiently waiting on my Kindle, so hopefully I can catch up here soon!

I have read 5 out of 10, so I am exactly where I need to be with this challenge. I have a few in the middle books on my reading stack now, so hopefully I can finish two by the end of next month.

2014 Fairy Tales Retold Challenge

I have read 2 out of 7 for this challenge. This really surprises me, because I usually read lots of fairytale retellings and I feel behind in this challenge. I have 3 on my reading stack now, so hopefully I catch up soon!

I bumped this challenge up to 3 pairs because I finished so early last year and this year I haven't finished a pair yet! I have all my pairs picked out but have yet to start them. I must conquer this soon.

  Kristin Hannah Reading Challenge

I am only reading one or two books for these two challenges, but I haven't started either one yet. I think I know what I want to read for each one, I just need to check them out from the library.

http://darlenesbooknook.blogspot.ca/2014/01/2014-kelley-armstrong-ya-challenge.html

I have finished The Calling and just have The Rising left to go to finish this challenge.

I forgot the April check in with this one, but I hope to do the July 1 check in. I am progressing okay with this one and will have a longer post on this soon.

I think that covers all of them except Book Bingo and an in depth Seriously Series. Both those post will be coming soon! Thanks to all the great hosts of these challenges!
