September Random Read

Random Reads

This is a meme hosted by Sarah at imlovingbooks.com. You can choose to use Goodreads or create your own list or use your bookshelves. The idea is to use random.org and type in the number of books on your list. Whatever number you receive is your random read for the month. I have decided  to use the books on my Kindle as my list. I buy or get free far too many books on my Kindle and then never read them. I now have 370 books on my Kindle, which is shameful! I did not finish Code Name Verity yet, because I got too depressed at the end of the month to finish it, although it is very good. I hope to finish it this month. The first two random number ended up being books I have actually read on my Kindle. Finally the number 15 matched up to Across a Star-Swept Sea by Diana Peterfreund, which releases October 15. I plan on reading it and releasing the review in early October. I loved For Darkness Shows the Stars and cannot wait to start Across a Star-Swept Sea! Beautiful cover!

Stacking the Shelves #8

Stacking the Shelves

Stacking the Shelves is hosted by Tynga's Reviews and is a meme for sharing books you've purchased, borrowed, or been sent for review. They can be physical or e-format. Just a small stack this week.
All book links go to Goodreads.

Bought:
Origin (Lux, #4)
Entangled Press

Origin by Jennifer Armentrout

Review:
From Edelweiss and Scribner for review:
Scribner
The Museum of Extraordinary Things by Alice Hoffman
Thanks to Scribner for this title!
I love Alice Hoffman's books and she is one of the few adult authors I read. I think everyone bought Origin this week, especially after Opal's ending. Hope you all got some great books this week!

Kitty's passing

This last week was a hard week. We had to say goodbye to our cat, Giada. We had her for almost three and a half years and she was the sweetest cat. She was only 4 and a half when she passed. She had asthma with diabetic complications when we gave her steroid shots and we had to try other methods like inhalers and liquid and pill form steroids. We had been treating her for about three years and she was one of the worst cases our vet had ever seen. She had been sick for the last month and on Monday she could no longer breathe without constant oxygen. The vets tried everything and we did not want to keep her suffering so they put her to sleep Thursday, which just so happened to be my husband's birthday. We are really sad, but we know she is no longer suffering and in a better place. She was my favorite reading companion and I miss her terribly. Rest in Peace, sweet Kitty!

I also finished Hero by Althea Kontis and will review it closer to release date. I am over halfway through Chaos of Stars by Kiersten White, so I hope to finish it this next week. Will of the Empress by Tamora Pierce

This review will have spoilers for the Circle Quartet and the Circle Opens Quartet. This is part of the Circle Reforged series and the storyline picks up right after the four mages had their own separate adventures.

Sandry is excited for her friends return to Emelan. She missed Daja, Tris, and Briar. Her friends missed her, but they want to make their own way in the world, without Sandry's money. The group also hides their dark secrets from each other and close off the magical bond that allows them to read each other's minds. Sandry really needs to visit her home country of Namorn to deal with taxes on her family's land, but she refuses to ask her sisters and brother to go with her. It is only through Duke Vedris that the four reluctantly set off for Namorn together. It is through their journey there and the evils of the Empress's court that the group begins to realize how special they and their bonds are. The Empress wants to keep Sandry and is willing to allow nobles to try to force Sandry into marriage. She also tries to ensnare Briar and Tris through praising their magics and Daja through the love of one of her maids. The group will have to work together to foil the will of the Empress, but can they reforge themselves or will they fall victim to their own pride?

I love the Circle books. The individual adventures of the group were great, but when they are together the story is fabulous. Pierce knows how to write strong female heroines and their strength is not always physical. Being a strong stitch-witch, controlling the weather, and being willing to open up to love are all strengths of her women. She can take an ordinary household task like weaving and embroidery and make it into something spectacular. Not only are her female characters great, but her male characters like Briar and Duke Vedris are strong men who value strong women. Briar might play the field, but he does have respect for his sisters and even realizes his promiscuity is not something to be proud of. Vedris wants to make Sandry his next in line, even though he has male heirs.

Favorite Character: It is so hard to pick a favorite. Briar makes me laugh the most and is the most down to earth of the group. Daja is a strong woman who values everyone she meets and throws aside conventional ideas of being a woman, while still embracing her own emotions.

Favorite Quote: "Love makes fools of us all, and desire does far worse."

I love Pierce's work and cannot recommend her books enough! Definitely 5 cups of cocoa!

Bout of Books 8.0 Wrap up

Bout of Books

Another Bout of Books is finished! I love doing this read-a-thon, because I always find new blogs to follow and new books to read. I met my page goal and then some with 549 pages! I also finished two books (Hero and Will of the Empress) and found several new blogs to follow. I think I met my comment goal too and I definitely met my mini-challenge goal with 6 challenges. This is a great read-a-thon and I can't wait until the next one!
